About Hairline Reconstruction for Women

Hairline reconstruction for women is a surgical procedure that can lower the front of the hairline to address visible hair loss and reduce the overall appearance of the forehead. This procedure uses various hair transplantation techniques to reduce the height and width of your hairline, allowing you to effectively rebalance your facial proportions.

For this approach, our specialists use either follicular unit extraction FUE or follicular unit hair transplant FUT (click on links to learn more about these two procedures) to take hair grafts from the back of the head and transplant them to the front of the hairline, where the new hairline will be created. (1) This creates a new hairline for women who are experiencing loss of hair in the front of their head or a receding hairline. A receding hairline can make the forehead look taller, causing the proportions of the face to become imbalanced. This procedure allows our specialists to fill in the area at the top of the forehead with hair that is less susceptible to hair loss, making the hairline look fuller, and minimizing the perceived size of the forehead.

Benefits

Hairline reconstruction for women and forehead reduction can offer several different benefits, including:

  • Natural-Looking Results: Our transplant techniques aim to mimic the growth patterns of your natural hair.
  • Enhanced Appearance: Lowering your hairline can create a more proportionate and balanced appearance between the upper and lower portions of your face.
  • Permanent Effects: This procedure produces results that last for several years, with many patients finding that their new growth is permanent.
  • Low Maintenance: After your new hair starts to grow, you can style it as you would any other hair.
  • Elevated Confidence: Refining the size of your forehead can enhance your appearance and help you feel more confident in your everyday life.

Candidates

These procedures benefit women interested in reducing the height and width of their foreheads or who feel as if their foreheads are disproportionate to the rest of their face. Those interested in this procedure should also have enough hair on the back of their head to transplant. Because FUT requires a linear incision, the forehead reduction procedure is best for patients who wear their hair in longer styles. FUE could be an option for patients who do not have enough hair on the back of the head to transplant, or for women who might prefer not to harvest a strip. Anyone considering hairline reconstruction or forehead reduction should be in good general health and have realistic expectations for their results. Ideal patients are nonsmokers or those who are at least willing to quit before and after treatment. This is because tobacco can harden and constrict your body’s blood vessels, leading to a delay in your body’s recovery processes and a reduction in available oxygen to the scalp. Nicotine and tobacco smoke can also lead to an increase in DNA damage, as well as disrupt the proteins that help regulate the hair growth cycle. Personal Consultation

During your consultation, one of our surgical assistants will meet with you individually. They will ask about your medical history and current prescriptions, as well as your aesthetic concerns and treatment goals. They may also perform a physical evaluation to assess the condition and health of your scalp, forehead, and hair follicles.

Your specialist will use this information to determine your candidacy and to create your personalized surgical plan. They will recommend the most effective surgical techniques for your case, help you design a more proportionate forehead, and collaborate with you to create a new hairline. By the time you leave, you will fully understand what to expect from your upcoming surgery.

Preparation

After scheduling your appointment, we will give you a set of detailed pre-operative instructions to help you prepare.

We may advise you to discontinue blood-thinning medications and supplements with the approval of your primary care physician. You should prepare to take time away from work and other responsibilities to focus on your recovery. Please follow any other instructions you receive from your care team.

Recovery

Our specialists perform these surgeries on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home on the same day as your procedure.

You may experience bruising, swelling, or discomfort as you heal, but sufficient rest and following aftercare instructions will help you manage these effects. We recommend that you rest in a reclined position with your head elevated. A few days later, the grafts will start to crust and scab. This crust will naturally flake off as you continue to heal.

We will also ask you to return for follow-up appointments during which we will remove your sutures and monitor your progress.

Results

After your procedure, you will be able to see new growth within the first start seeing results within 12 weeks, but significant hair growth can take 6 months or more. This growth will continuously improve over time, with patients seeing full results after the first year.

After the transplanted hairs begin to grow, your forehead will appear smaller, and your hairline will appear more flattering. If you had previously felt self-conscious about your forehead or hairline, always hiding it under bangs, hats, or headbands, you can feel more confident about your appearance after hairline reconstruction or forehead reduction.

Corresponding Procedures

PRP for Hair Loss

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss is a treatment that uses the regenerative properties of the body to stimulate new hair growth around the scalp. PRP contains growth factors that can regenerate tissue, repair wounds, and support the creation of new blood vessels. When applied to the scalp, this serum may additionally stimulate dormant hair follicles to promote new hair growth in the desired treatment areas. (3) We can perform PRP as a standalone treatment, but combining it with hairline reconstruction or forehead reduction can lead to reduced recovery times and thicker, faster hair growth.
